Ben Yu currently serves as 3D Scanning/BIM Manager at Holovision 3D, with more than 15 years of experience in construction and engineering industry. Before starting with Holovision 3D, Ben spent 12 years as Project Manager/BIM Manager worked for sister company Watkins Steel. During that time Ben was heavily involved with 3D laser scanning, BIM modeling, construction surveying, animation and AR technology.
In the world of design and construction, it can be a challenge to communicate design intent to the client. This is often due to lack of knowledge on design concepts and inexperience in interpreting and understanding 2D Drawings. This can be costly when you get to the final stages of the project. As the client gains a feel for design, it is often subjected to re-works, either due to errors or change of mind. In this session, we will take you through a case-study example, demonstrating how the use of 3D Technology at the design phase of a project can improve design coordination and collaboration across project teams. Specifically, we will highlight the benefits of 3D Laser Scanning, SketchUp, Trimble Connect, and the Microsoft HoloLens (Mixed Reality). By incorporating this technology into our process, we can now prove the design without having to build it, allowing the client to visualize the environment before making costly changes. We conclude the session with a discussion on how this technology can be applied across multiple industries.
1) Understand the affect design coordination can have on the result of a project.
2) Use a scanner to create a 3D model, and use the HoloLens to visualise the design.
3) The benefits Scanning, SketchUp, Trimble Connect and HoloLens have on improving design coordination.
